Athabasca University (AU) is one of the world’s foremost and fastest-growing online and open education institutions, serving over 35,000 students across 72 countries. AU is the third-largest university in Alberta. AU offers online bachelors, masters, and doctorate programs alongside online courses for both personal learning and professional development. It is uniquely founded on the principles of flexibility and openness, giving students control over their studies so they can learn whenever and wherever it is right for them. AU’s open enrolment model helps remove barriers to learning so that anyone 16 years or older can register for most first-year undergraduate courses, regardless of previous education. AU also offers continuous enrolment—most courses start on the first of every month. Students can study from anywhere—11% live in rural, remote, or isolated areas. Students get access to e-texts and academic supports such as tutoring, academic advisors, and counselling. Although students often study independently, they are not on their own. On average, undergraduate students are 31 years old and graduate learners are 38 years old. Around 67% of first-year undergraduate students work while they study. Many students from other institutions rely on AU to help complete their studies, with 26%of AU students visiting from other institutions. Studying online requires discipline, but it is perfect for those looking for a flexible, open pathway for their educational journey. AU is committed to advancing research and is home to Canada’s only UNESCO Chair in Open Education and five Canada Research Chairs.
The Bachelor of Arts (4-year) provides students with a broad, flexible education that allows them to develop, understand, and disseminate knowledge, to think critically, and to build on these abilities. In addition, the four-year degree fully prepares students for most graduate programs. As a graduate of Athabasca University’s Anthropology program, you will gain an in-depth appreciation for the four fundamental subfields within Anthropology (archaeology, biological anthropology, cultural anthropology, and linguistic anthropology), and their strong interrelationships.
