Named after the legendary landscape painter of the Pacific Northwest, Emily Carr University of Art + Design is more than a world-class centre for fine arts education. The university offers undergraduate degrees in art, media and design, as well as graduate degrees and continuing studies programs. Each concentration aims for a healthy mix of in-studio learning and theory. Since 2020, it has been ranked the top university in Canada to study art and design by QS World University Rankings. Facilities include a motion-capture and visualization lab, digital and cell animation studio, sound mixing studios and a wearables and interactive products studio. ECU is one of the few institutions in Canada with full stereoscopic 3D film and animation equipment. The campus, located in False Creek Flats, is on the Central Valley Greenway, a 24-km pedestrian and cyclist route. Bike lockups, showers and locker facilities are available on campus. It includes a number of gallery spaces where students can curate and exhibit their work, and a 400-seat theatre that hosts film screenings, speaker series, and other events. The annual exhibition by graduating students, The Show, is a campus-wide public exhibition showcasing work from every discipline. The Shumka Centre for Creative Entrepreneurship is an innovative hub that gives students the guidance and resources they need to launch a variety of projects, from companies and products to curatorial initiatives and events. It’s just one of several research labs on campus that allow students to assist and contribute to leading-edge art and design research. Career development resources include co-op programs, internships, advising sessions, direct engagement with art and design professionals, and more. “ECU students have unique access to award-winning instructors, cutting-edge facilities and world-class programs to prepare them with job-ready skills and support them as they become the next generation of creative professionals,” says Trish Kelly, Interim President + Vice-Chancellor at Emily Carr University.
